Rajkot, a former princely capital of the Saurashtra region, is located on the banks of the Aji and Nyari rivers. Founded in the year 1612 as the headquarters of the States of Western States, Rajkot was previously the administrative center for about 400 princely states in the Saurashtra, Kutch and in northern Gujarat.
During British domination Rajkot saw a development in the field of art, culture and education. The city is the birthplace of the best intellectuals who ultimately guided India in the struggle for freedom.
