Haridwar is an ancient city and an important Hindu pilgrimage site in the Uttarakhand region. Haridwar is considered one of the seven holiest places for Hindus.
The Ganga River, which originates 253 kilometers from its source at Gaumukh on the edge of the Gangotri glacier, first enters the Indus Indian Gangetic of India at Haridwar, which gave the city its ancient name, Gangadwára.

Haridwar has a strong symbolic value, very important for Indian spirituality. It is precisely in this place, in fact, that the sacred river Ganges embarks on its journey which sees it bathe the holy cities, after having flowed from the Himalayan springs and having covered the entire journey that brought it here. Here its waters are clear and for this reason they are chosen for the purifying bath.
Hindu tradition states that bathing in these waters ensures complete purification of the soul, allowing it to access the liberation of "Nirvana".

Haridwar is a very important religious center as the Kumbh Mela mass pilgrimage takes place here cyclically, during which millions of faithful gather to immerse themselves in the Ganges. The other 3 major cities where this holiday is celebrated in rotation are Allahabad, Ujjain and Nashik
