Visit Keylong on the road from Manali to Leh

Keylong, the land of monasteries, is located on the road between Manali and Leh. An oase of natural beauty among the snow-covered white mountains and arid brown hills.

Keylong is the district headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district of the state of Himachal Pradesh.
Fancy land of monasteries and Buddhism is locate on the Manali – Leh Highway. Cut off from the rest of the world as heavy snowfalls in the Rohtang pass, cuts out all road transport from the end of October to mid-May.
This town is an oasis as it rests between the white snow clad mountains and the brown barren mountains. The road winds through serpentine bends on the gigantic mountains until Keylong is reached. The place has rivers, mountains and a beautiful landscape when compared to the drab landscape outside this valley. The place has the highest population in the region and also has a market. Rudyard Kipling had described Keylong as “It is surely that God lives here; this is not the place for men’.
Keylong is situated on the banks of the Bhaga River. There are many temples and monasteries in and around the place.

Lahaul Valley

Tal Deepak
Deepak Tal is particularly well known among the various places to visit in Keylong. This is particularly due to the fact that the waters of this glacial lake remain calm, reflecting the serene environment of snow-capped peaks and dusty hills.
Located at a height of about 3,750m above sea level make it one of the best places to visit in Keylong.

Kardang Monastery
Located in a village of the same name, Kardang Monastery is considered the most important monastery in the Lahaul Valley. A white facade decorated with prayer flags in their traditional colors welcomes visitors arriving at this beautiful monastery. Located at the foot of Rangcha Peak, this 900-year-old monastery belongs to the well-known Drukpa lineage and was built on the left bank of the Bhaga River.
In the monastery, you will find thankas, musical instruments such as flutes, drums, horns, as well as old weapons, colorful frescoes and a series of murals.
