Pilgrimage trips to India
Discovering the best known pilgrimages of India. Trekking and pilgrimage trips to India.
India is a land full of spirituality, famous for the cult of millions of gods and goddesses, each known with their own myths and legends. By collecting several religious beliefs, India is a very religious nation.
Every year, thousands of people travel to India in search of a sense of peace and lighting, to achieve their interesting balance and get closer to their God.
Since different important religions are practiced in the country, there are many pilgrimage places that continue to keep a millennial history. Pilgrimage trips to India attract numerous devotees every year in these pilgrimage centers scattered across the country. Some of the popular pilgrimages undertaken in India include the Chardham Yatra of the Temples of Uttarakhand.
Char Dham Yatra - Uttarakhand
Char Dham, who literally means four sacred homes of the Hindu sect, is perhaps the most known pilgrimage in India.
They are the means to find your inner self and approach you to uncontaminated natural beauty. Seasoned mountains, green valleys, demanding paths and icy temperatures accompany you on this sacred pilgrimage that starts from Yamunotri and ends Badrinath.
Basically, Char Dham Yatra refers mainly to the spiritual journey to Badrinath, Puri, Rameshwaram and Dwarka Dhams. But with the passage of time, the four sacred sanctuaries of Uttarakhand (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath) have been defined Chota Char Dham or Char Dham of Uttarakhand. Char Dham Yatra has always been one of the main pilgrimages to India.

Puri Rath Yatra - Odisha
Puri Rath Yatra in Odisha is one of the most anticipated holidays in the country. It is an annual celebration that sees the participation of about one million devotees and visitors from every corner of the world. Dedicated to Lord Jagannath (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu), the event is one of the largest and oldest Hindu festivals in India.
Also known as "Chiott Festival", Rath Yatra is celebrated in Ashad Shukla Dwitiya (second day of the fifteen of the month of Ashad). The main attraction is the procession of three wooden wagons, that is to say Nandighosa, Taladhwaja and Devadalana who transport the divinities respectively, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra (the older brother of Jagannath) and Subhadra (their sister). This road procession also offers those people the opportunity to seek the blessings of the divinities to whom it is forbidden to enter the temple of Jagannath.
The Temple of Jagannath is one of the four sacred sanctuaries of Chardham Yatra. The other three are Rameshwaram, Dwarka and Badrinath. Considered a symbol of equality and brotherhood, the festival begins with a great ceremony in the morning. New wagons are built every year, but the idols of the divinities are replaced by new once every 12 years. The Yatra marks the annual journey of the divinities at the Temple of Gunicha (the temple of their aunt).
Date of Puri Rath Yatra 2025: 27 June 2025

A popular legend connects the Kedar bench to the Pandava del Mahabharata. Located at an altitude of 4,632 meters above sea level, Hemkund Sahib is one of the sacred pilgrimage centers for Sikh in India. Located in the district of Chamoli of Uttarakhand, Gurudwara is dedicated to the tenth Guru Sikh, Guru Gobind Singh.
Gurudwara is surrounded by seven snowy mountains and each of them is adorned by Nishan Sahib.
In addition to its religious meaning, the glacial lake and the high altitude setting of the Gurudwara make it one of the most demanding pilgrimage Yatra in India, which sees a high influx of devotees from all the corners of the world. It is the splendid natural setting of Hemkund Sahib who attracts even people of other religions in the place.
The Gurudwara Hemkund Sahibo opens to pilgrims from May to October every year.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra
Considered one of the most demanding and sacred religious trips for Hindus, Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is a perfect fusion of spirituality, boundless beauty of nature and adventure.
The Yatra is undertaken by thousands of people every year and holds the supreme position among all the pilgrimage centers dedicated to Lord Shiva. That's why, a visit to Mount Kailsh, the Lord's home, is considered a way to achieve salvation.
The dazzling Monte Kailsh is located in the south-west isolated corner of the Tibet region, at an altitude of 6,638 meters. It is one of the highest areas of the mighty Himalayas.
Together with the Hindus, the sanctuary also has a significant value for the followers of Buddhism and Jainism. There are various other interesting points located near Mount Kailsh such as Lake Manasarovar, Gauri Kund, Tirthapuri, Yam Dwar, Asthapad, Siwasthal and Flagpole Tarboche.
How to get there? There are four ways to reach Monte Kailsh, but the base point of the Kailsh Manasarovar Yatra is only Kathmandu.
I travel by land from India: it is a 28-30 days trekking and you have to book well in advance for registration since the availability is limited and the participants are chosen by drawing. The entire process is administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India.
Journey to the ground from Kathmandu: reach Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and from there your spiritual but exciting expedition to Mount Kailsh begins.
I travel by land from Lhasa: visitors fly first to Kathmandu and then to Lhasa through China Air and then again in Kailsh Parvat.
Travel by helicopter: it is designed for those who are not at ease with high altitude steps and want to finish the Yatra in the shortest period of time. Fixed wing planes transport passengers from Kathmandu to Simikot via Nepalganj. From Simikot, a helicopter takes the command and flies to Hilsa and from then on, Land Cruiser are used to reach the final point.
IMPORTANT: the Kailsh Manasarovar Yatra is allowed only to Indian citizens, in possession of a valid Indian passport and aged between 18 and 70 years. He/she must be in physical and medical form with a 27 or lower body mass index (BMI). People who suffer from asthma, diabetes, hypertension, epilepsy, heart disease, etc., are not eligible for the Yatra.
