Gir's lion is a majestic animal, averaging 2.75 meters long, and with a larger tail, thicker elbow tufts and prominent belly folds than its African cousin which has a larger mane. Gir is home to 40 mammal species and 425 bird species.

Along with the famous lions, other animals and reptiles in the park include the chital (Indian spotted deer), sambar, chinkara, blackbuck, leopard, jungle cat, langur, striped hyena, wild boar, gray musk shrew, marsh crocodiles, Russell's viper , Indian python and monitor lizard. Gir is also home to over 300 bird species, many of which can be seen all year round: Malabar whistling thrush, paradise flycatcher, crested serpent eagle, king vulture, pelicans, painted storks to name a few some.
