It is surrounded by breathtaking hills and tea gardens. In the foregone times, Bagdogra used to be a place from where the British spun revenue on a larger scale by exporting the tea leaves grown in the tea plantations of Bagdogra.
Bagdogra is a nature's bounty. There are mesmerizing destinations that lure the tourists on a large scale. Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Kali Mandir, ISKCON Temple and the Bagdogra Hill Station are some notable attractions in Bagdogra.
Jore Pokhri Wildlife Sanctuary
Jore Pokhri Wildlife Sanctuary is the habitat of some high-altitude animals like Himalayan Salamander, locally known as 'Gora'. Many animals and birds are found there.
Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary
Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the foothills of the Himalayas, between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers.
It is a reserved forest area that initially started as a game sanctuary where children took rides. The entrance to the sanctuary is located at Sukna which is about two & half hours drive from Darjeeling.
The sanctuary is spread over varying elevations and across 158 sq. km of forest area. The altitude varies from 500ft. at the southern area near Sukna and rising up to 4,300ft towards the northern area near a place called Latpanchar. On the east the sanctuary is bounded by the river Teesta and on the west by the Mahanadi river and Hill Cart Road.
